Traditional festival of Tu Lien communal house (Ngoc Xuyen communal house)

Tu Lien, Tay Ho, Hanoi

Traditional festival of Tu Lien communal house (Ngoc Xuyen communal house) Tu Lien communal house organizes two main festivals: March 16, the feast of the Holy Mother (main festival) and October 12, the feast of the Holy Ong. The traditional festival of Tu Lien communal house contains many cultural values, expressing the respect of the people of Tu Lien to the village Tutelary Gods who govern this land.  Tu Lien Communal House (Ngoc Xuyen Communal House) worships 3 tutelary gods of Tu Lien village who were 3 brothers (Bao Trung, Minh Khiet and his sister named Phuong). The communal house's legend records that: 3 brothers were children of a family belonging to the Nguyen family in Dong Luc village, Khoai Chau district, Son Nam religion (now Tu Dan commune, Khoai Chau district, Hung Yen province). When the Champa army invaded our country, the king issued a decree asking for talented people. The two brothers Bao Trung and Minh Khiet met the king and asked to lead troops to fight the enemy. The two were awarded the title of General of the Middle Rank by the king. The two men recruited and trained 30,000 soldiers, divided into two armies, naval and infantry, to attack the enemy's post. Not long after defeating the Champa army, the two men passed away. The king was extremely sorry and appointed the two men "High Class Phuc Than" and ordered the people to set up temples to worship and incense for thousands of years. Their younger sister is a very good mulberry grower and silkworm breeder. Legend has it that one day while planting mulberries on the sandy beach along the river, suddenly a dragon and snake emerged from the water and wrapped around her and brought her back to the water country. Later, the villagers many times saw her floating on the water with a jade cup in front of her forehead and immediately built a shrine to worship her, called Ba Chen's tomb. During the resistance wars against the invaders, she had epiphanies many times to help the king win the battle. Feeling grateful for her heroic spirit, the king issued a decree conferring on her the title "The Highest Princess of the Most Highly Blessed Lady". Tu Lien communal house festival is held on the 16th day of the third lunar month (to avoid the Holy Lady) and the 12th of October (to avoid the Holy Ong) every year. Every 5 years, a major festival is held on March 16. Tu Lien communal house festival is solemnly organized with palanquin procession, sacrifice, incense offering... The most special feature of the big festival is the water procession. The water procession ceremony begins early in the morning, the procession departs from the communal house to the Red River beach to carry water for the Saint ceremony. At the head of the procession is the Long Dinh palanquin, followed by the water procession palanquin and 3 Holy palanquins. The water procession is brought onto the boat to make offerings to heaven and earth, praying for divine blessings. The head of the organizing committee of Tu Lien communal house stood up and asked for water from the river to offer to the Saint. The water procession ceremony is a unique spiritual ritual imbued with the water-praying beliefs of the residents living with the wet rice civilization along the Red River. During the festival, people and tourists from all over can participate in many exciting activities such as: rice blowing competition, Chinese chess, cockfighting, tug of war...
